Children's Christian Education
Mission: To help children, in a safe and loving environment, become more aware of God’s presence in their lives.
Classes are offered to children aged three years through high school from September–May. Children younger than three are lovingly cared for by our nursery staff. The goal of our programs is to share the love of God, by learning and teaching the stories of His people as told in the Old and New Testaments, the stories of Christ, and our own liturgical traditions. We seek to create and nurture the faith of both the children and their teachers in safe, subject-centered communities of learners. We consider our classrooms to be sacred, holy space and treat them accordingly.
Godly Play – Children age 3 - 2nd Grade
Godly Play is a way of entering into religious stories with the heart, not just the head. Developed by noted Episcopal priest, teacher, and author Dr. Jerome W. Berryman, Godly Play seeks to teach children the art of using religious language, parable, sacred story, silence, and liturgical action to help them become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence around them and in their lives. Stories are told in a small circle using hand crafted figures which reinforce the action of the lesson both visually and physically. We have two Godly Play classrooms, one for 3 year olds – Kindergarteners, and one for First through Second graders.
Making All Things New – Third through Fifth Graders
Elementary aged children – 3rd through 5th grade – use the All Things New curriculum. Lessons explore some of the best loved bible stories from the Old and New Testaments. Christian "basics" like stewardship, prayer, Holy Communion, and The Apostles Creed are also taught. Each class includes an opening, storytelling, a response, and a closing prayer. Music and art are frequently used during the response time to deepen the group’s understanding of the lessons.
